[France Day 3] Friday, July 13, Carcasonne to Homps (47k)

Origin: Carcasonne, La Demeure de la Cite 3 Rue Saint Jean

Destination: Homps, La Maison del Palmiers 4 Quai de Negotiantes

Now a cycling group of 6 with the Sintobins.

It is a holiday weekend in France and there were many boats with vacationers on the canal.

La Poissioniere Moderne was our lunch spot in Trebes..our table right next to the canal so lots of boat action.

After lunch the heat was intense, and the "jungle" adventure along the canal began.
The canal path slowly narrowed to a dirt path. At places, it was no more than a foot wide and often with uneven ruts. The grasses along the path had not been cut back. The loud cicada chorus accompanied our slow progress. The riding required intense concentration to stay in the path...fun at first for the adventure. Bob noted that the canal trail maintenance must depend on funding and interest of each town. Several residents confirmed this. We were having too much fun, however, to let a little heat and fatigue dampen our spirits.

Homps and its stretch of the canal offer a great arrival experience that starts with a bridge and spillway unlike any other structures along the canal.

This 11-arched cobblestone spillway,
Ourages de l'Argentdouble,
was built in 1693.

Once in town, the busy, attractive small harbor teased and pleased as we found our way across the arched road bridge around and down to La Maison des Palmiers--a B&B next to the Homps port with a lovely large garden patio in front.
The harbor was full of boats that were full of people in festive mood. We crossed over the arched pedestrian bridge and enjoyed a nice dinner at Restaurant La Peniche in their interior garden area.
