Several of us had heard fireworks during the night celebrating France's national holiday, Bastille Day.
The trip contined after a nice breakfast on the patio next to the pool. Have we mentioned in this blog how much we love the French salted butter on bread each morning?
It was a short 7-9 km ride along the Robine Canal to Narbonne. This canal, constructed in 1686, connected the Aude River to Narbonne and then to the Mediterranean.
Narbonne's cycle path along the canal passes under bridges adorned with flowers,-- though when it suddenly ended at one point, we carried the bikes from the quai to the street.

Kristin purchased a broad brimmed hat at the bustling clothing market along the canal and Marney and Benny picked up picnic veggies and fruit at the beautiful indoor municipal market.
We followed the Robine Canal out of the city and then turned onto a paved cycle path headed along the marsh and lagoon. ( one blue heron spotted) Grabbing the shade from one of the few trees on this open stretch, we picnicked. Across the lagoon to our right, the town of Guissan was visible.
We reached Narbonne Plage by road, cycling further down the beach.
Shortly all were headed to the wide white beach to jump the waves, to cool off and to celebrate reaching the Mediterranean by bike.
