[ Spain Day 3 - 3.5] Thursday ( - Friday), June 14 (15), Bilbao to Castro Urdiales, Cantabria

Origin: Bilbao City Rooms, Bilbao

Destination: Pension La Mar, La Mar 27, Castro Urdiales, Cantabria

By trolley, then bus, we moved west 35 km to a pleasant low-brow seaside city, established as Flaviobriga in 74 AD by Roman leader, Castro Urdiales. It looks like the hillsides are occupied by hundreds of not-oppulent apartment and condominium buildings.

The preserved remnants of a Roman road and well.

close to our lodging.

British cyclists shared stories during our 'Italian' lunch at La Pergola.

The city awakened in the warm, clear evening.

We joined the many who
strolled on the cement and
stone jetty that tries
to protect the city and harbor
from what we are told are
ferocious winter storms
with towering waves.

We climbed the medieval bridge to castle,
lighthouse, and Santa Maria de Asuncion church
and other remnants of that past.

There we discovered an exhibition of the work of David Arranz.

Some final thoughts and additional images:
The northern-coastal pilgrimage trail to Santiago Compostela passes through here.
We are easing into the Spanish late-dinner routine.
Loved the quiet, meditative walk along the wide,
design-stamped, cement walk along the shore.
